[ making wolf sounds ] sorry. he didn't like that very much. on the beltway all around town, things are great. it's a laugh in here and a laugh outside because if you're heading out the door right now, all of your construction is gone. no major incidents with the exception of one accident in manassas blocking southbound prince william parkway at wellington road. here in montgomery county things are great on the beltway, college park to bethesda. no problems on 29, 95, 270. coming in from rockville to the point where the lanes divide. let's take a live look outside. if you're planning to head here on 27 on at clarksburg at 121, volumes are just beginning to pick up but the lanes are open. back over to the maps. this time all the way down south in southern maryland. looking good on route 4, route 5, route 301 traveling 210 out of accokeek to oxon hill to the wilson bridge. there is one accint in prince george's county brinkley road at temple hill road. let's take a li look outside and show what you it looks like

here at route 210 heading for the wilson bridge. very quiet. i'll be back in a few minutes with more traffic. back to you guys. >> thanks, monika. a doctor who can't write prescriptions. he's fighting desperately to get his privileges back. >> that doctor lost the right seven months ago. he says that decision has led to the deaths of some of his patients who relied on strong painkillers. surae chinn is live at today's hearing site with details. he's trying to get his lance back? >> reporter: that's right, andrea. the hearing starts at about 10:00 this afternoon. dr. salerian says the big problems all started last year when he says a former employee broke into his office, stole prescription pads, started forging his name and going up and down the east coast to sell these prescriptions with his forged name leading to at least one death from these four prescriptions and now to the government officially -- officials blaming him.

d.c. police confirmed the burglary. the pain doctor is fighting before the d.c. health department's licensing board today for his license to point class two prescription drugs. he says his patients are dying because the d.c. government won't allow him to prescribe the medicines they need. >> it's been a nightmarish experience because i'm being falsely accused of having murdered and having killed a young man. >> reporter: repeated calls to the d.c. health department went unanswered. today the hearing starts again at 1:00. we will hear from dr. salerian's patients there about half an hour. back to you -- in about half an hour. back to you. >> surae chinn live at the site where dr. salerian is fighting to get his license back. d.c. police found a big piece of evidence in a tripping shooting overnight. they got the suspect's car but

still haven't found him. a woman and to men were shot last night at the bp station on benning road in northeast washington. police say the shooter got in an argument with the gas station clerk, grabbed a gun from his car and started firing. one victim has serious injuries but all three people in this are expected to survive. an unis expected twist -- an unexpected twist in the case of the accused east coast rapist. he was expected to make a plea charged with attacking a couple of teenagers trick or treating in 2009. when he got before the judge, aaron thomas said he wasn't sure what he was doing or what was right or wrong. now it appears the case is headed to trial. thomas is suspected also of attacking women from virginia all the way north to connecticut. as long as kwame brown stays out of trouble, he won't go to jail for a campaign finance violation. a d.c. judge sentenced the former city council chairman to 30 days in jail but suspended the sentence. that happened hours after a

federal judge sentenced brown to one day in custody followed by six months of home detention for lying on loan applications. he also has to complete 480 hours of community service. brown admitted to both crimes in june. he resigned from the council. now to the ever widening scandal that started with david petraeus resignation as c.i.a. director. the man who replaced petraeus in afghanistan general john allen hoped to be the next nato supreme allied commander in europe. however, his nomination to that post is now on hold while investigators look into e-mails general allen exchanged with jill kelley and whether they were inappropriate. yes, kelley is the same florida woman who reported threatening e-mails to the f.b.i. leaving agents to discover the source of those e-mails paula broadwell. and, yes, paula broadwell is the woman who was having an affair with david petraeus. both allen and kelley deny there was anything sexual about

their relationship. it's about 5:06. time for the latest your money report. >> jessica doyle is here with today's headlines. can wall street bounce back? >> let's hope so folks need to know the dow is standing at its lowest level since july. all the damage is just in the last couple of weeks. better than expected earnings from home depot. not enough to calm jitters about the upcoming fiscal cliff. we've been talking about europe's ongoing debt problems all this year but today tech stocks could get a boost after cisco systems reported profits and sales that beat wall street estimates last quarter. the dow stands at 12,756 after falling nearly 59 points. the nasdaq was off by 20 and the s&p 500 was off by five and a half points. toyota has announced a massive recall around the world. this recall affects almost 2.8 million vehicle worldwide and about a million of the vehicles affected are right here in the

u.s. this covers certain models of the prius and corolla due to problems with the steering mechanism and the hybrid system water pumps. this is toyota's second multimillion car recall in two months. you may pay more for that morning cup of joe in the future thanks to climate change. coffee prices are already the highest they've been in 30 years because of the combination of high demand and poor harvest. now a new study from scientists in london and ethiopia finds a group of coffee beans could be extinct by 2018. the coffee grown on most plantations comes from a limited genetic stock. they do not have the ability to shift to rapid changing climates. >> thankfully 80 years from now or 2080 is a long time. >> we have been having all these massive problems with

hello. welcome back to 9news now. it is 5:15 on this wednesday morning. a chilly morning. it's 36 degrees here at broadcast house. are we going to warm up a little bit? >> about 15 or so. we'll make it potentially 51 but it's going to be a brisk day and a bright day, too. a lot of frost out there. weather wise at the bus stop forecast, thankfully the winds aren't as strong as yesterday. a tiny bit of a breeze but a lot of areas have calm winds. temperatures 20s and 30s, clear and cold to start. sunrise at 6:50. it will be a nice sunny day today. we'll take it with a noontime temperature only around 47. winds north at 10. that will give us a windchill low to mid-40s as we go throughout the afternoon with a high of 51. at 5:00 p.m. back down to 47 degrees.

it is cold this morning. 29 in vienna. 28 lovettsville in northern loudoun county, the cold spot at 30. we have 32 in college park and andrews and fort belvoir barely above freezing now 34 degrees. outside on the michael & son weather camera, good visibility, clear skies. feels like 30 at national with those north, northwesterly winds at 8 milean hour and the dew point has fallen into the 20s. nationally it is going to be a cold day across a good part of the northern half of the country. then cool, even places like atlanta won't even hit 50 today. all the warm stuff in phoenix and florida but we do have a flow right now across the country which is generally west to east. we're not seeing any big shots of cold air now. i was checking out some of the places in the northwest territories of canada. i saw a third below zero up there so the cold is building and eventually is going to head our way. we are looking at these clouds -- maybe a few weeks when i say

"eventually." out west a couple of areas of showers. they'll be coming in today or tomorrow. today high pressure building. a nice sunny, cold day. tomorrow a few more clouds. across the region you see the forecast like in chicago mostly cloudy, 45. we've got 48 here in cincinnati. atlanta barely 50 degrees. should see a mix of sun and clouds up and down the east coast from boston at 46 and virginia beach today sunny but cool and 50. looking at our forecast, it is going to be nice. a little bit chilly for this time of year. average highs in the upper 50s. we're looking at 51 this afternoon. tonight back in the mid-30s in d.c. with upper 20s north and west. a chilly thursday. a few more clouds, 52. friday maybe 53 with a mix of sun and clouds. the weekend, saturday i feel pretty good about, 55. it's sunday, monday, tuesday. there's going to be a coastal storm. some of the models have it bringing us some rain.

it's going to be a cold day, 20s and 30s. we have 36 out there now with 20s in the suburbs. 47 by noon. sunshine. by 5:00 back to 47 after hitting a high of 51 degrees. look how cold it is this morning. mid-20s out in the mountains of west virginia and petersburg. we have 32 from oran. 30 in winchester. stephens city around 27, one of the coldest this season. the bay keeping those folks just above the 40-degree mark. there go the front and the showers from yesterday well off shore. we've got nice high pressure building in. a couple of clouds arriving took but staying dry for a few more days. i'm happy to say mostly the roads look good. no problems to report on the beltway around town. we're looking good. if you're planning to come in on 95 from triangle, you'll hit the brake as time or two as you head into woodbridge across the occoquan river. let's go further north and show you what it looks like here on the beltway in oxon hill.

route 210 down to the wilson bridge looks absolutely fine. no issues as you come in to the beltway from southern maryland as well. let's go back over to the maps. this time we're heading to the bw parkway and route 50 inside the beltway through cheverly. no issues into the northeast corridor. all the anacostia river crossings are fine if that's where you're headed right now. we'll take another live look north of town at the beltway. no problems here at river road. i'll be back with more at 5:40. back to you guys. >> thanks, monika. 5:41 now. the david petraeus sex scandal is now threatening the career of the man who succeeded him as the commander of u.s. troops in afghanistan. >> petraeus resigned as c.i.a. director last week admitting his extramarital affair with his biographer paula broadwell. f.b.i. agents discovered their relationships when they traced threatening e-mails from broadwell and the e-mails were sent to jill kelley, a florida woman who knows both general petraeus and general john allen. now the pentagon is looking into questionable e-mails between general allen and

kelley. that has put allen's nomination to become nato supreme commander in europe in jeopardy. >> his nomination has been put on hold as a prudent measure until we determine what the facts are. >> meanwhile acting c.i.a. director michael morell will testify before congress instead of former c.i.a. director petraeus. lawmakers have questions about the deadly consulate attack in benghazi, libya in september. another four-star general is being demoted but for different reasons. general ward is accused of spending thousands of dollars on lavish travel. ward will have to repay the government some $82,000. president obama will be pretty busy looking for new personnel in his cabinet. he now has the task of looking for a new c.i.a. director and needs to nominate

a new secretary of state candidate because hillary clinton has confirmed she will leave the post. cbs news has learned the leading candidate to replace her u.s. ambassador to the united nations susan rice. white house sources say rice has performed well on iran and north korea, but she has been criticized over the comments she made after the attack in benghazi and may face tough republican opposition. nancy pelosi asked female democrats in the house including incoming freshmen to join her at a news conference. she became the first woman ever to lead a party caucus on capitol hill. after the mid-term election, she became the first ever female speaker of the house. a teen already behind bars accused of murder is now facing another charge. 17-year-old joshua mebane is accused of killing teresa bass and critically injuring her husband jerry if waldorf last

-- in waldorf last month. the couple was out walking their dog when mebane shot them with an automatic weapon. he was already in jail when investigators made the connection between two cases. he was arrested and his juvenile girlfriend and charged with murder of mohammad quadar. the driver was shot in the head and left beside his cab which was burning at the time. mebane is charringed as an -- charged as an adult. a d.c. pain doctor says his patients are suffering. some he says have even committed suicide. >> psychiatrist dr. alen salerian is opposing to a decision banning him from prescribing medications. >> reporter: dr. salerian was stripped of his ability to prescribe these class two narcotics back in april but his

problems started long before that when his office he says was burglarized. the pain doctor says a former employee into into his office, stole prescription pads, forged his signature and sold it for 20 bucks each in a drug ring. one of those bogus prescriptions rutted in at least one death. dr. salerian appears before the d.c. health department licensing board today to fight for his license to prescribe. he argues that pain itself causes brain damage and agrees he prescribes pain medication less conservatively than other doctors. now he says his patients are dying committing suicide because the d.c. government won't allow him to prescribe the medicine they need. we talked to some of his patients back in april. >> i can't even get up to go to the bathroom for fear of pain. >> the bad part is, it's taken away my quality of life with my

cities. northern virginia, you're part of this demo. toys 'r' us will allow you to purchase something online and pay for it in the store. and you can reserve their hot toys ahead of time and pick them up on black friday. macy's releases its black friday ads this week but you have to download the macy's app to get them. target has put their specials on facebook and kohl's will have codes on the shelves that let you scan, purchase and ship an item to your home while in the store. some big changes. here is your planning guide so you know when you can get shopping for the traditionally deep discounts after thanksgiving dinner. wal-mart, sears, toys 'r' us, they're the ones leading the charge with store openings at 8:00 p.m. they're followed by target at 9:00 p.m. and then at the stroke of midnight, a host of other stores like macy's, kohl's, best buy and many shopping malls will fling the doors open to the crowds. on top of that a small group of retailers like k-mart and many old navy stores will stay open during the day on thanksgiving.

desert southwest. phoenix only in the 50s. a weak system is what we're seeing across the country. one in the northwest and the other one that will affect us with just some clouds more than anything. this is coming through areas in the midwest this morning. a few rain and snow showers here but the bark worst than the bite as just some clouds. the air is dry, chilly. the clouds will be here mixing with the clear skies as we head into tonight and during the day on thursday. so when lieu at the futurecast -- you look at the futurecast, we see very little significant weather heading our way. by noon still sunny and quiet. by 6:00 clear and cold. temps in the 40s dropping to the 20s and 30s. the system is going to pass to our south with a little more in the way of showers across the carolinas thursday morning. that will throw a few clouds up our way tonight and during the day on thursday. we'll stay dry around here. traveling down to maybe raleigh or rocky mount, going to have to dodge a couple of raindrops. looking at our forecast today the temperature 51 this afternoon. it will be a cool one. tonight we're down to about 36 in d.c. upper 20s north and

west. 52 tomorrow, partly sunny. friday i think a few more clouds and sunshine, about the same, 53. the weekend starts out fine, 55. it may finish okay. it all depends on whether the coastal storm stays off shore or on shore and right now it's still a 50-50 chance of that happening. so we'll go chance of a shower and 50. 5:50 on the nose. here's monika with timesaver traffic. on the southbound side of 295 after eastern avenue, some construction is in place blocking two lanes and look at that slow traffic trying to get through that area because of that late clearing construction. keep that in mind through that corridor. the bw parkway and route 50 not affected yet as you head through cheverly. taking a look at the southbound side of 270, you see the yellow and orange forming. that means it's slowing down out of frederick toward clarksburg. okay in germantown. a live look at the beltway on connecticut avenue. outer loop still look good bunching up at new hampshire

avenue. let's go back over to the maps this time to the other side. inbound i-66 or the dulles toll road. both are incident free. no issues as you head toward the beltway in tysons corner. one more last live look. here's what it looks like 395 at duke street. i'll be back with more at 6:00. back to you. >> thanks, monika. union representatives for d.c. firefighters are questioning a proposal for cutbacks when it comes to overnight hours. >> fire chief kenneth ellerbee would like to divert the overnight medics to the day shifts. the union is open to the day but it's not the case for firefighter paramedics. firefighters would have dual priorities. union officials say there are many scenarios where that would be a serious problem. >> a fire in an area of the city that borders, a border area of the city and the medics that ride the fire engines are

tied up with the fire ground and not able to provide advanced life support. >> chief ellerbee's plan would need the approval of the d.c. council before he could make any changes. they are the men and women who make sure hospitalized veterans are in a clean environment. more than 300 janitors at walter reed medical center say they haven't been paid in two weeks. supporters came out to stand in solidarity with the janitors tuesday at a rally in bethesda. 9news spoke with one of the frustrated employees. >> i have done the job. i have complied with their regulations and everything but i'm not getting paid. >> it tends to get frustrating. the federal contractor that employs the janitors says the government hasn't paid them so they can't pay their workers. it is 5:52. making news now, business owners in lower manhattan may not be able to survive superstorm sandy, even those who have made enough repairs to
